The Desire To Sing

by Anne Hallinan
(CALGARY)

I am a 29 year old Irish girl. I want to become a much more confident and unique singer. I put barriers in my way that feed my lack of confidence when it comes to singing.

I have a huge private inner desire to start singing with others...I am determined to make this happen, for expression, for creativity and fun...

My voice does get strained easily. I have difficulty reaching those higher noted with belting.

I don't have the money to pay for a vocal coach at the moment. I want to learn how to do the coarse rock and roll sound as well as the softer smoother tones...I have a lot of work to do on my voice.

Thank you in advance

Anne

From The Editor

Hi Anne, and thank you for your wonderful post.

I can already tell you're going to become great, as it's obvious you have the passion and desire to succeed.

It sounds like you're on the right track, but let me give you some singing tips to help you on your way.

First, as you mentioned your voice gets strained easily... This is an indicator that you've still got a little way to go with your technique.

For someone who is creative and passionate like yourself, the best possible thing you can do is get your technique to the point where it becomes invisible...

... Meaning your voice is functioning in good order without you having to think about it.

This way you can simply "let go" and do your thing as an artist.

So spending the time to carefully develop some good vocal technique will be invaluable for you.

A great place to start is on the video section of this website. You can watch videos from some of the best vocal teachers in the world as they give some of their best singing exercises.

Learn as much as you can from these, and practice them regularly.

More and more you'll find you'll be able to sing with less strain... higher notes will come easier... your tone will be more pleasing... and you'll really be able to unleash into every performance!

Good luck, and never give up! Passion and dedication will take you far, especially when you mix it with the right know how (Hint, check the videos on this site to get started!)

Enjoy the journey!
