I recently read a book called the “Inner Game of Music” by Timothy Gallway and Barry Green. It was a fascinating book and contained some priceless insights into how to do a great singing performance.

I thought I’d share with you a few of the concepts, because they can really help you deliver big time in any singing auditions you have.

By the end of this article you will understand and be able to apply some of the techniques that took Mr Gallway many years to develop. So keep reading on!

Ok, the first thing you need to know is inside your mind as you perform, there are two major parts of you.

One part helps you to deliver a stunning performance, while the other part of you does nothing but hinder your performance...

Timothy calls these two parts:

1. Self one

2. Self two

Self one is the voice in your head that speaks. You know when you walk into an audition and you can hear this voice chattering away saying things like, “Oh no, I’m so nervous… I can’t possibly impress these guys”

Or maybe…

“I know I’m gonna forget the words and screw everything up!”

This type of thinking comes from the analytical, critical part of your mind. And unfortunately, self one rarely ever helps the process of performing at your best.

Usually it’s this part of you that makes you “freeze up”, feel incredibly nervous, and do a “below average” performance.

On the other hand, self two is the master singer within you. Have you ever had one of those singing sessions where you sounded great, and everything was completely effortless… and you didn’t even have to think about anything?

Well, this is what Mr Gallaway refers to as “self two”. It’s within self two that the amazing, talented performer exists.

So to do a stellar performance, you need to eliminate the effects of self one, and allow self two to take over. When you do this, you will feel less nervous; your performance will be much more enjoyable… and best of all…

You will sound magnificent!

Ok, so how can you do such a thing?

Let me give you a few tips…

The first thing you can do is focus your attention on some external factor. Such as in the case of a singing audition, focus your attention on the faces of the judges.

Focusing on an external factor in this way takes your attention off of self one, and allows self two to take over.

Another thing you can do is focus your attention on the sounds you are making with your voice. Listen to it carefully. Once again, this can take your attention of the pesky little voice in your head. It allows the naturally gifted performer inside of you to “take over” and you will sing amazingly well!

These are two simply tips that will allow self two to take over. I suggest you practice these techniques outside of a singing audition to begin with. The reason is, when you do this, it feels like you have lost a bit of control. You are not focusing on your singing technique, therefore it feels like something could go terribly wrong.

The truth is that self two is FAR more able to perform the song than self one. And if you allow self two to control the performance, you will be much happier with the outcome.

But at first it doesn’t feel that way, so it’s a good idea to get used to this new way of performing.

Ok, let me give you a few more singing audition tips to help you dominate and blow the judges away.

Firstly, you need to get your singing voice as good as it can be.

When you have great singing technique, it makes the “self one, self two” thing to REALLY have a great effect.

I highly recommend you check out this free program to get your technique in order. Even if your technique is already good, the exercises in this program will sharpen it even further. And if your technique isn’t the best, you can shape your voice from average to excellent in a very short time using these exercises.

Secondly, take an hour or so to look at yourself and determine what is unique about you.

To make a good impression in a singing audition, you want the judges to immediately understand what you’re bringing to the table.

If you can walk in there, give a great performance, and also have the judges understand what separates you from the rest of the applicants, you have done a great job.

So once you figure out what makes you special, work at making this quality stand out. If you have a beautiful vibrato, make sure to “show off” this vibrato in the singing audition. If you have a stunning vocal range, make sure to hit some stunning notes.

If you have a unique tone quality, allow this to come out in the audition.

You want to make it absolutely clear what you bring to the table. So work out what you bring to the table, and then flaunt it!

Remember in the stage show “The Producers”? Well, the song named, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it” says it all!

Well, I hope these tips have been useful to you! Feel free to print out this article and refer to it over and over again. Some of the tips took me a long time to learn, so you may as well “cut the learning curve” and go straight to the results that they bring!

Good luck in your singing audition!
